Behavioral interviews help banks understand who you are, how you communicate, and whether you fit the team. Most answers should be approximately 60–90 seconds: concise, specific, personal, and clearly connected to what you learned.
The Big Three Behavioral Questions
1. Tell Me About Yourself / Walk Me Through Your Resume
Start with basic facts, explain the experiences that brought you to today, connect those experiences to finance or banking, and end with why your background fits the role. This should feel like a short story—not a line-by-line reading of your resume.
- Who you are, where you study, and what you study
- Experiences that shaped your interests
- How those experiences led toward finance and banking
- Qualities such as work ethic, teamwork, curiosity, and attention to detail
2. Why Investment Banking?
Make this personal. Draw on experiences where you enjoyed fast-paced, analytical, or team-oriented environments; exposure through mentors or internships; entrepreneurship; or curiosity about companies and transactions. Explain why banking fits what you genuinely enjoy and what you want to develop.
3. Why This Firm?
Use two or three specific reasons supported by networking conversations. Discuss culture, mentorship, training, deal exposure, industry strength, responsibility, or team structure—and explain why those qualities fit you.
Key Tip
“I like the culture” is not enough. Explain what you learned about the culture, who you learned it from, and why it matters to you.
Use a Clear Structure
- Situation — What was happening?
- Action — What did you do?
- Result — What happened?
- Lesson — What did you learn?
- Tie-Back — Why does this make you a stronger candidate?
Draw from different experiences—work, school, athletics, clubs, entrepreneurship, volunteering, and personal challenges—to show that you are well-rounded. Prove qualities through specific stories rather than simply saying you possess them.

Final Tips
Build a story bank for leadership, teamwork, conflict, failure, time management, initiative, and achievement. Practice aloud so your answers sound polished but not robotic.
